I have gotten this question a few times already and until today (or actually yesterday) there was no support for running SCOM functions – such as Management Server and Agent and Console. However yesterday Microsoft published a new KB 974722 outlining support for Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7.
Windows Server 2008 R2 is now supported to run Operations manager Server roles, Agents and the console. Windows 7 is supported to run the agent and the console.
Of course the SCOM agent was already running on Windows 2008 R2, but there was already a problem with the Base OS management pack that did not monitor the R2 version. Currently the Windows Server Base OS management pack has also been updated as you can read in this post of mine, so it is now possible to run OpsMgr functions on Windows 2008 R2 and have it monitor itself. :>>
There are a number of possible issues when upgrading a Windows 2008 to Windows 2008 R2 with SCOm functions running on it as outlined in the KB article mentioned above.
Now lets have some fun! :p
